Strada della Forra & Tremosine

Churchill's favourite road — carved into vertical cliffs above the lake

This is arguably the most dramatic road in all of Italy. The Strada della Forra — nicknamed 'the most beautiful road in the world' by Winston Churchill — winds through a narrow gorge carved by the Brasa torrent, with sheer limestone walls rising 200 metres on either side. The Vespa is the perfect vehicle: nimble enough to navigate the tight hairpins, slow enough to absorb every breathtaking metre.

A tiny village tucked between cliff and lake. Stop for a coffee at Bar Campione and admire the old cotton mill ruins.

A gem of a village — Mussolini's last residence was here. Walk the harbour and visit the 13th-century Franciscan cloister.

Turn left inland at the sign. The gorge begins immediately — slow down and look up at the vertical walls.
